Product Review: Blocker
Tie Ring
I stumbled
across a mention of this excellent product in Joe Camp’s newly released
book, “The Soul of the Horse: Life Lessons from the Herd”. I immediately
ordered two Rings from SmartPakEquine.com. They arrived last week, and I
have tied a dozen horses with them already. The verdict? What a fabulous
product!
The Blocker Tie Ring is designed to release the horse gently and slowly
should the horse become frightened and pull back. Installed as directed at
about 5 ft. height, it gives the “tied” horse as much or as little slack
as you wish, but completely eliminates the potential for serious injury.
We initially tested the Tie Ring with Primo (photo right), Anita Ergo’s
twenty-something Paso, who pulls back – fiercely - the instant he realizes
he is tied fast. I looped the rope through the Tie Ring, leaving Primo
plenty of slack. When he invariably went into warp speed reverse, the rope
slipped through the ring slowly enough that I could calmly catch him
before he escaped, but quickly enough that he didn’t panic. The Blocker
Tie Ring is easily installed and available in either chrome plating or
stainless steel. Not only is the Tie Ring an effective, safe, and humane
way to retrain horses that pull back, but it is also an all-around better
alternative to tying a horse fast. The height of the optimum installation
keeps horses from dropping their heads under the tie rail to forage for
stray weeds, and prevents the rope from ever becoming looped around the
ends of tie rails, or worse yet, around the horse’s head.

The Thoughtful Horseman’s rating of the
Blocker Tie Ring: Brilliant!
