Sati

Andalusian/Arab Mare

Initial Assessment

Apparently, Sati's X-rays show typical navicular changes.  (I have not seen them yet, but will try to get them uploaded!)  She shows extremely underrun heels, long toes and consequent very delayed breakover, as well as atrophied/underdeveloped frogs indicative of poorly developed digital cushion and little use of the back of the foot...all classic symptoms of horses with "navicular" problems.  The first thing we'll do is address the long toes, moving her breakover back to a more appropriate position.  This alone will begin to correct the underrun heels.

Recommendations

24/7 turnout in a herd environment to encourage as much movement as possible.  Diet balancing to correct mineral imbalances, including both primary and relative deficiencies.  Boots and pads may make Sati more comfortable and encourage a more natural stride.  Only movement will stimulate development of the digital cushion, so the more Sati moves, the quicker she'll become more comfortable.
