Paris

12 yo Quarter Horse Mare

Initial Assessment

Another "navicular" horse begins her road to barefoot....and healing.  Paris was wearing pads of different heights under her shoes. There was Equithane under the right front pad, but only under one side. Hmmmmm. Well...anyway...here's what we're going to have to fix for Paris:

Right front:
Heel is extremely underrun, toe waaaaay out in front of her. The sole in front of the frog apex is very flat; either P3 is a hair away from the ground, or she has built a big layer of false sole and we're not seeing the true bottom of the collateral groove. Her heels are predictably contracted, heel bulbs very pinched. Bars prominent, but not clearly distinguishable from the surrounding sole, which raises the possibility of false sole. Very carved frog (shoer had to get rid of it to apply the pad!) that reeked of thrush when the shoe and pad came off, although there was no visible thrush. I rolled her toe conservatively and relieved her quarters and just barely showed the heels my rasp.

Left front:
Much more upright (thank goodness!) Much less contracted than the right, but still pinched and a poor, sad, skinny little frog that hasn't felt the ground in a long, long time. Very prominent bars, which I trimmed just above the sole plane. I took a modest bit off of her very high heels (maybe a hair more than 1/8") and rolled her toe conservatively.

Recommendations

Aggressive thrush treatment.  Boots and pads may be necessary for some time.  Diet assessment.
