Marker

20 -something Missouri Fox Trotter gelding

Initial Assessment

Marker was 6 weeks from his last trim, but had grown precious little hoof.  His soles had been aggressively carved by his previous farrier, and he had inadequate collateral groove depth at both the heel and the apex of the frog.  His heels are very contracted.  He has a history of navicular disease.  I essentially just rolled his toes, and opened the central sulcus of his frogs with my knife.

Trim Notes

01-28-09

Finally some progress!  Marker's heels have expanded; the widest part of his foot has moved back considerably.  He is starting to develop solar concavity.

09-23-09

It's a little bit like watching paint dry, especially with these older horses. But one year later, you can see how much has really happened...Marker's heels have opened considerably, his frogs are looking much more robust, the widest part of his foot is no longer at the very front of the foot, and he's developed nice concavity. He is still only marginally more comfortable, but moves much better in his boots and pads.
