Joan

(pronounced "Yon" like
"yonder")
Friesian Gelding
Initial Assessment
Joan will be a very good case study. His hooves were incredibly
tall when I pulled his shoes...I honestly don't think I've seen hooves
grow that tall without hoof capsule distortion, but his wall is so
thick and healthy, they just kept getting taller and taller instead of
spreading or curling. His set-up trim was one of the most
aggressive set up trims I've needed to do, but his hoof capsule is
STILL exaggerated, and I will probably do a 2 week retrim that is
almost as aggressive just to get him to a reasonable place.
Joan's front shoes were padded, and the sole and frog underneath quite
rotted. Hard to imagine what good the pads were supposed to
do...his sole plane was still a good 2 1/2 to 3" from the ground.
Joan is currently being treated by his vet for a locking stifle that,
frankly, is probably a result of the condition of his feet. It
will be interesting to see if that problem resolves as we get his feet
balanced and healthy!
Recommendations
Joan's owner was quick to address diet issues. His rotted frogs
healed quickly, just from removing the pads and the material
underneath, although soaking would take him to the next level.
Trim Notes
Joan is doing great! He has never needed boots. His hoof
wall is still chipping pretty radically; I suspect that will reside as
the months go by.
