Dune

2001 Tennessee Walking Horse Gelding

Initial Assessment

Dune has been a part of our barefoot herd since spring of 2007.  When I first pulled his shoes, he was starting to develop "forward foot"; he also had NO collateral groove depth at the frog apex, and went frighteningly flat footed.  Applying a heel bevel, and resisting the temptation to trim his lumpy, overgrown bars helped Dune grow sole, and he now has beautiful concavity.  He still grows considerable bar between trims.  He is comfortable on all kinds of terrain now!

Recommendations

Dune is on a precisely balanced diet.  The herd lives in a large, 100X150 pen which opens onto a 2 acre dry lot pasture.  We ride the trails, which vary from very sandy to extremely rocky...barefoot and bootless!

Trim Notes

08-17-08

Dune's bars are finally starting to callous off level with the sole plane.

02-10-09

After a very wet winter, Dune shed out sole to reveal spectacular concavity.

12-27-09

Dune's feet continue to improve. I'll take some new images this next trim...I think the comparison will be fairly impressive. He goes sound barefoot on all types of terrain!
