Dakota

1997 Paint Gelding

Initial Assessment

Dakota's left front clearly had a pretty big dorsal flare which had been rasped off. His LF frog is stretched very far forward, and his LF heel was quite long and clubby.  Right front shows medial flaring.  While his heels are not underrun, the hoof capsule on both front feet is narrow and stretched forward.  Very little concavity in the front feet.  All four of Dakota's feet showed some mediolateral imbalance.  Some hip/back issues suspected, which is not surprising with the medial heel on all four feet longer than the lateral heel.  While Dakota goes reasonably sound, we can make some tremendous improvements to his trim which will help keep him sound for many years to come!

Recommendations

Chlorine dioxide soaks to address thrush issues will accelerate heel expansion.

Trim Notes

Dakota and his herdmates moved to an excellent facility several months ago.  They now have a good sized pen that they share as a herd, with fabulous footing (decomposed granite, or DG) and superb drainage.  Their hooves have improved tremendously since the move!
