Blue

Arab Mare

Initial Assessment

Blue's hooves were just waiting for her shoes to come off...she shed a thick layer of retained sole immediately, and showed good collateral groove depth afterwards.  Her heels are somewhat contracted, and her frogs show the deep central sulcus typical of the bacterial/fungal issues that always accompany heel contraction.

Because of her good sole coverage, thick, tough wall & minimal sensitivity in the back of her foot, we did not fit Blue with boots & pads.  She is logging lots of trail miles comfortably!  I think Blue will transition smoothly, and I expect to see the overall proportions of her feet to become healthier quickly!

Recommendations

Hygiene to address thrush.

Update 12-27-09

Blue transitioned very easily. She never required boots, even for rocky trail rides. Her feet continue to look better and better!
