Belle

Quarter Horse Mare

Initial Assessment

Belle has some heel contraction, and her frogs are harboring thrush.  She's hanging on to a lot of sole material.  While her collateral groove height is good both at the frog apex and at the heel, her hoof capsule looks long, indicated the inner structures are vaulted by the heel contracture, and possibly sitting lower in the hoof capsule.  She is comfortable without boots.

Recommendations

Chlorine dioxide soaks and packing the central sulcus with cotton balls soaked in essential oils will hasten a healthier heel.  Mineral balancing is also recommended.

Update 12-27-09

Belle's owner, Kyris, now does her own trimming. She's doing an excellent job, and Belle's feet continue to improve. She has been100% comfortable from day one!
