The Thoughtful Horseman: Barefoot Hoof Care

Okay, I admit that I had a great deal of resistance to the idea of hoof casting in the beginning. But now I find I'm using this awesome tool more and more.

EquiCast fiberglass casting tape is fabulous stuff. With a wider weave than traditional casting tape, EquiCast allows more ventilation. It essentially creates a custom fiberglass "boot" around the hoof. The foot can still flex as nature intended, but the cast supports the wall, making it useful for things like cracks or resections. It can be used to create concavity in thin soled horses, and to protect the sole. Casting is an excellent alternative to booting for pasture horses that need round the clock protection.

I'm only just beginning to realize the full potential of hoof casting, but I'm loving what I can do with it already!
